Financial institutions are in general all institutions that provide various financial services for their customers. Some of the institutions function only as mediators in share markets and debt security markets. They collect funds from investors and direct them to financial service providers.
Broadly speaking, there are three main types of financial situations. The first of them are deposit-taking institutions that accept and manage deposit and make loans. Among these there are banks, building societies, credit unions, trust companies and mortgage loan companies. In the second major group there are insurance companies and pension funds. The third group involves stock brokerage firms.
These institutions deal with various financial activities associated with bonds, stocks, loans, insurance, retirement planning, investment, portfolio management, and so on.
Additionally these institutions can be categorized into:
- business finance companies
- mortgage finance companies
- car finance companies
- personal finance companies
- personal loan finance companies
- home finance companies?
- corporate finance companies and so on
The difference between retail and investment banks is that retail banks or commercial banks work with individuals or small companies. They receive deposits and make loans. On the other hand, investment banks work with big companies. They give financial advice, raise capital by issuing stocks or shares and bonds and they organize mergers and takeover bids.
Building societies, as another type of deposit-taking institutions, specialize in mortgages. Many of these have now become normal commercial banks.
Additionally, there are also specialized types of banks, e.g. central banks, private banks and clearing banks. Central banks issue currency and carry out the government´s financial policy. Private banks are owned by private people, not by the state. Clearing banks pass cheques and other payments through the banking system. On top of that, there are also non-bank financial intermediaries such as car manufacturers or department stores that now offer products like personal loans, credit cards and insurance.
Insurance companies can be divided into two groups. They are life insurance companies and non-life general companies. Life insurance companies sell insurance and pension products as opposed to non-life insurance companies which sell other types of insurance such as fire insurance or flood insurance.
Stock brokerage firms and investment funds
Stock brokerage firms and companies help investors put their money in the stock market and get the maximum return from their investments in the stock market. At present investors can encounter two types of these companies and they are online stock brokerage firms which help their clients online using the internet and off-line stock brokerage firms which are the traditional companies with branches.
