Czech car maker Škoda Auto hit by software glitch

Škoda Auto, the Czech Republic’s biggest auto producer, has been hit by IT glitches in SAP software for a second day running

Škoda Auto, the Czech Republic’s biggest car producer and now enjoying booming export orders, has been hit for the second day running by problems with its internal company information system, which has, reportedly, caused chaos to its dispatch of new cars from factories and ordering of new parts.

The problems with the SAP internal information system was reported on Tuesday and, according to the Czech News Agency (ČTK), continued on Wednesday. Škoda Auto spokesman Rudof Dreitaler said the company counted on the software problems being overcome soon. Car production has not been stopped due to the problems.

The daily Mladá fronta dnes (MfD) reported on Wednesday that the computer glitch meant the car manufacturer, part of the Volkswagen Group, could not send cars out of factories with a result that they were starting to fill up parking spaces with transport lorries kept waiting on site. Dreitaler said dispatches from factories were continuing.

Škoda Auto is currently the brightest aspect of the export-oriented Czech economy, with 741,800 cars sold in the first 10 months of the year, a rise of 16.2 percent year on year. The surge in sales slowed in October to 11.3 percent with 77,000 cars leaving showrooms for new owners.

The manufacturer is counting on selling more than 800,000 cars for the first time by the end of this year.
